Pantomime Fun

Pantomimes are as much a part of Christmas as mistletoe, mulled wine and carol singing. We had a wonderful New Years' Eve when all the family got together and we attended the pantomime "Robinson Crusoe and the Caribbean Pirate" at The New Theatre, Cardiff.

Christopher Biggins was marvelous as the Dame (Mrs Crusoe) and Paul Zerdin - the ventriloquist - as Robinson Crusoe. They played the audience and their parts with characteristic vigour, ensuring there was never a dull moment.

Bangs, fireworks and flames accompanied a magical mermaid (Lucy Sinclair) and the evil Blackheart the Pirate (David Bedella) on stage as well as firing up a Caribbean camp.

There was a violent storm at sea and a spectacular underwater scene where luminous neon fish swam from floor to ceiling.

All the traditions we love and expect were there; men dressed as women, “he’s behind you” jokes, booing, hissing, baddies and goodies and even a pair of gorillas. It was a lovely treat. My two year old Granddaughter Katie was up dancing, clapping and singing, enjoyed every minute of it. Just watching her was a treat in itself!

After the pantomime we all went for a lovely meal at The Harvester and enjoyed a wonderful New Years' Eve.

I was lucky enough to receive these beautiful leather art journals in my Christmas stocking so I have been very busy doing some artwork "journal style" which I will be adding to my blog shortly. These are wonderful little books, just the right size to carry everywhere with me in my bag and I love the beautiful way they are decorated and bound. It will be a challenge for 2012 to fill these lovely journals with artwork as lovely and interesting as they are.

Casper Bear

My beautiful Chocolate Labrador "Casper Bear" had his second knee surgery last week on Tuesday 4th October (luxating patella). The operation was a lot more problematic than the last knee but Casper is doing well. He will be having his staples removed in a few days and then we will be preparing for his hip replacement in the new Year.

This photo was taken 5th October when Casper returned home after a night at the veterinary hospital. He was in some pain and not feeling too happy, hence the sad face, BUT, he is well on the mend now and back to his happy old self and getting into allsorts of mischief as usual. What would we do without him! He is such a preciouse boy!

A Few Of My New Designs

Sorry I haven't been around for a while. Things have been rather hectic lately. My daughter Amanda has been ill with Kidney Stones, very painful and our African Leopard Tortoise Timmy has been seriously ill with a blood condition, "Septicemia". We have no idea how he got it, vet thinks from a small cut to his leg that wasn't noticed. He hasn't eaten for 18 days, is being fed with a Critical Care formula via a tube in his neck. He is a very sick little boy but is showing signs of improvement thankfully. He is now more alert and has put weight on and is no longer dehydrated. He is on loads of medication and back and fore to the vets. He is not out of danger yet but it is looking very promising now. We were staying at our caravan when he was taken ill so we are still there with him, close to the vet that is treating him so my internet has been very limited lately. I have a Vodafone mobile dongle but it is soooo painfully slow that I cannot bear to try it too often as it gets me really irritable.

Casper our Chocolate Labrador who has Hip Dysplasia is back to the vets for his second knee operation on Monday. This has been delayed due to my daughter being ill and also Timmy but he is doing great and the other knee has healed up wonderful. There has been a delay in my taking his breeders to court with all that has been going on but I have an appointment to get the ball rolling for as soon as we get back from the caravan. That is something that I MUST get on with!

Whilst up here I have been getting on with my new designs. Two "Genelefumps" are now completed, "GRACIE" 6ins and "SORBET"8/9ins . Also two of my "Jijome" Bears "WOOKIE" 7ins and a vintage style Jijome (7ins in a lovely Vintage Gold Mohair) who I have not had chance to take a photo of yet. My first "Genista" Bear design is also complete "MILLY" who is only 6/7 inches tall. I have 25 more already cut out and ready to sew, 6/7ins, 12iches Genista Bears, 4/5 ins Animes, Genelefumps and Jijomes.

I am going to try to upload a few pics for you to see. They will not be on my website untill I get back from the caravan as it is tooooo hard on the internet up here.

I have been really busy the last few weeks while Casper has been re-cuperating from his knee surgery, trying to catch up with all the bears who weren't quite finished so that I can continue with my new designs. Below are a few of them. Hope you like them!

"Will" is from a traditionl pattern (same as Sophie and Jodie below) and stands at just 7 inches tall, fully jointed, poly filled, boot button eyes. needle felted nose, cotton mouth. He has been created from a lovely vintage gold mohair. He reminds me of "Wee Willie Winkie", hence his name. He comes complete with his beige/white plush jacket and hat ready for the winter. He is a cute little bear with a lovely smile. He is now on my website and in my Etsy Shop!

"Cloud" is fully cotter pin jointed, poly filled, black German glass eyes, needle felted nose/snout. He can stand on his own unaided using his big bulky feet and his pot belly.

"Ruben" - Vintage Dreams

Here we have "Ruben", another Ted in my "Vintage Dreams" Collection. Standing at 14 inches tall Ruben has been handcrafted from a lovely soft cream quality mohair with co-ordinating ultrasuede paw pads. Black boot button glass eyes, black embroidered nose, poly filled with some steel shot for extra weight, fully jointed. "Ruben" has been gently aged to give him a soft worn look, and a look that he has been repaired in places. he comes wearing his lovely old wooly waistcoat to keep his old bones warm. There is a choice of waistcoats with Ruben, you can have him with either his cream or his orange waistcoat. "Ruben" is a traditional looking bear, as are all my "Vintage Dreams" Teddy Bears and he is a solid boy of a substantial weight.

She has button eyes and a worn cotton nose. Mabel is fully traditionally hardwood and cotter pin jointed, polyfilled. I have gently aged Mable to give her a pretty worn look. Casper Home And Doing Well

Casper after his knee surgery

Casper is now back home with us and doing very well after the surgery on his left knee. Just to update you, the response we have had from Caspers breeders (Fallowfen Gundogs) has been very derisary, I cannot go into details at the moment for legal reasons, but we are not happy with the outcome or their attitude, so a formal letter is going out today and we have been told that we have a good case to be represented in court, so unless anything changes e.g. a better offer, it looks like that is the road we will be going down.
I also intend to start a campaign/petition as we feel that breeding puppies with genetical problems must stop here and now, (especially by breeders accredited by The Kennel Club). We do not want to see any more puppies have to suffer with Caspers conditions. We have been in touch with The Kennel Club and are awaiting a response from them.

We took all the precautions we could before purchasing Casper. He was purchased from a breeder accredited by The Kennel Club, parents had good hip and eye scores (means nothing), we went all the way to Nottingham to get him to ensure (or so we thought) that we were getting a puppy with no genetical problems. So what went wrong? This is what we need to campaign about, to ensure this does not happen again to anyone else. I have been a campaigner for animals for many years, petitioning, standing outside with banners in the rain and so on, no matter what the distance, so I'm an old hand at this and like a dog with a bone when I feel something is wrong especially concerning animals. Casper is "My Baby"so you can understand why I am so angry and upset about the whole situation and the way we have been treated.

Casper is feeling much better every day now thankfully, but it is going to be a long old haul to get him walking properly like any other normal dog. As I said in a previous post he has to have his right knee operated on in around 6 weeks (same as this op), and then there are both hips to be replaced one at a time. He's a tough old "Chocolate Pudding" and we are very proud of him and wouldn't change him for the world. Our vet has said that after all the surgery has been completed he should be able to walk and run like any other dog, so I'm looking forward to that. But we should not have to pay £12,000 for our dog to be able to walk properly because of bad genetical breeding. And, more importantly Casper should not have to go through all of this. We will do it, because we love the bones of him.

I will let you know when my campaign is online so you can pop along and show your support, and have your say if you would like to.
Please let me know your opinion on buying a dog for £600 and then having to spend £12,000 for him to walk properly! Is that fair? Should the breeder be liable as it is a genetical problem (diagnosed by the age of 6 months) or should we have to bear the full cost of the treatment?

Surgery Today

Casper a few days ago at the caravan

Casper, my beautiful Chocolate Labrador, is in Bristol at the moment with his Orthopaedic Surgeon, having surgery on his left knee (Luxating Patella). He will have the right one done in 2 to 3 months. Unfortunately we had to leave him in Bristol untill tomorrow as he has to have a tube in to drain the fluid off, but hopefully we will be able to pick him up and bring him home tomorrow, after he has had an assessment.

As for his hip dysplasia, the x-rays were done on his hips also and they are what is known as "Floating", they are not in the socket. His bones are all in good shape but his hip problem is going to have to be sorted also in the near future. Looks like a total hip replacement for him after all. We were hoping that by the time he reached 18 months that things may have changed but that is looking very unlikely now. He is 15 months old now and nothing has changed so it's unlikely, unless a miracle happens.

We telephoned a little while ago and Casper is now out of surgery and looks like the operation was successful. A groove was cut into his bone for the kneecap to sit in and also they had to pin it together. The vet says that it is now very strong. He will be recovering for at least 6 weeks, no walks etc in that time and will probably have the right knee done (same thing) in 2 - 3 months depending on recovery. After that he will be having a total hip replacement, one side at a time with about 3 months recovery for each side.

We will just be glad to have him back home. I am so far behind with my bear work and art but Casper has to come first. My new designs are all but finished, it's just having the time now to put them all together. Some are nearly completed, just bits and pieces to do so I am hoping to get on with them whilst Casper recouperates. I do have a completed bear that I will be putting on in the next few days, just have to photograph him when we get some sunshine, but he is not from my new designs.

Early start in the morning so I am off for an early night.

Her finishing touch is a very pretty pink shimmering organza ribbon around her neck. Summer was not created from my own design but made by myself from a bought kit I had given to me. The Roosevelt Bears - Their Travels And Adventures

The "Teddy" part is a name they found

When they chase a bear to a mountain top.

We all know about Teddy B and Teddy G - The Roosevelt Bears who became immensely popular in 1905 when Seymour Campbell Eaton (using the pen-name Paul Piper in the newspaper) began writing (in verse) about two bears from Colorado, The Roosevelt Bears. They got their names, Teddy--B and Teddy--G for their colour fur. In January 1906, the New York Times began publishing their first adventure, the voyage from Colorado to New York, in the sunday supplement, with nice illustrations by V. Floyd Campbell. The lovely Roosevelt Bear books were too follow by Seymour Eaton.

I was fortunate enough to recently acquire these lovely little bears, Teddy B and Teddy G, complete with their own travel trunk made by Schmidt. Here they are:

Poor Little Katie Rose had an accident in playgroup and cut her poor little nose! It had to be glued. Here she is in the hospital not looking too happy. She has been back to the hospital today and there is no other damage thankfully, it was too swollen to x-ray at the time. She was soooo brave bless.

I have been so far behind with my Bear Making over the past few months due to illness and other personal problems but I am now getting back on track and have several "Genista Bears", mohair and needlefelted in the making, also my very first "Genista Doll" is also on the work table. I have been brimming over with new ideas in my sketch pad over the past few months whilst sorting things out and now plan to get my drawings made into little creations for The House Of Genista in 2011.

Casper playing ball on Sunday

The appointment has come through for Caspers' assessment with the orthopaedic surgeon in Bristol. Friday 8th October at 8.30am. He has to be examined and assessed to see which surgery is best for his hip dysplasia. The vet will decide whether he should wait to have a complete hip replacement (which cannot be done until he is fully matured), or a Triple Pelvic Osteotomy a procedure effective for younger canines, like Casper. The pelvic bones are surgically broken down so that certain parts can be realigned accordingly. Sounds horrendous!!

We have been told not to feed him after 8pm the night before as the surgeon may decide to operate the same day – dependant on the assessment. OMG, my nerves are in tatters. I am dreading Friday! It just seems so unfair on him, he is such a lovely, sweet and gentle little soul. He wouldn't harm a fly! The procedures are sooooo expensive too, I'll be making bears till my fingers drop off lol!! Awhh well, could be worse, look on the bright side!

CASPER BEAR - LIFE OF A CHOCOLATE LABRADOR

"It never rains but it pours!" How true that saying is. We are just getting over our little Yorkshire Terrier Megan having had surgery - a hysterectomy - when this morning our gorgeous little Labrador Retriever, 6 month old Casper has been diagnosed with "Hip Dysplasia"! Apparently his hips are in a very bad way. He is at the vets having surgery on the tendon to assist with the problem.

He was playing in the top field yesterday with a few of is friends who are also chocolate labradors and came back full of beans and as happy as could be. A little later however he started to act strangely, as if he was in pain, spent the rest of the day in his bed, which is not like him at all. Last night when we went to bed he spent most of the night whining as if he was in discomfort, so we sat with him and comforted him untill he fell asleep, I watched him all night, and then off we went to the vets this morning and were astounded at the outcome. We thought he had a bad belly or something, but no! It is hip dysplasia.

We will be picking him up from the vets later today. He will talk to us about Caspers diet, exercise, long term problems etc to try and prevent this condition getting any worse. Long-term, he may have to have a hip replacement when he is fully matured and grown.

Like everything in life, we will have to take things day by day and simply just do whatever is necessary for Casper. Hopefully this condition will not worsten with a proper diet, excercise and I suppose it's best to know about this as early as possible as it gives us a chance to make sure he doesn't put on weight etc. We are planning to sell our house and buy a bungalow in the very near future so that will ensure Casper doesn't have any stairs to climb as he gets older. We at least have time to plan I suppose. I'm rambling a bit I know, it just seems to be one thing after another lately. The only consellation is that "it could be worse" I suppose!

I will let you know how he gets on.

Megan is unwell at the moment! As I write this she is having a full hysterectomy at the vets for a suspected pyometra - infection of the womb. I am worried sick I have to be honest as she is so small and she is my Baby but she is a tough little dog. We have to telephone at 2pm to see how she is (it is 12.40pm) and we are biting our nails. I will let you know how she gets on.

UPDATE: Saturday 4th September

Megan has had her operation and is now back home. She is doing really well, in fact when we went to collect her she walked out of the treatment room and tried to jump up my legs, she was so excited to see us. She has to go back on Monday for a check and again the following Monday. The infection is ALL CLEAR thank goodness. She is being really pampered and spoilt and is loving every minute of it lol. She is resting as much as we can get her too, but she still managed to chase Oliver the cat this morning. We are all so relieved and the vet said that there is no reason why she cannot make a full recovery. Honestly, you never know whats around the corner do you! It's quite frightening really! Thank you so much to everyone for your well wishes for little Meg, they are very much appreciated. You are such a lovely bunch of people!

Chasing Rainbows

Do you believe that there is a pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow? Of course you do - doesn't everyone? The fact that we can never see it is besides the point, it's something we've believed in since childhood, and why not!

There must be an absolute fortune laying there at the end of the Rainbow if the content of the pot is just half as spectacular as the sheer spectacle of the beautiful sight we see before our eyes. There's a real feel good factor about a Rainbow isn't there. They say it heralds "better times ahead". For me , personally, a Rainbow in all its splendour. makes me think of lost loved ones, and my imagination runs wild amid the beauty and splendour of the spectrum of colours.

Centuries ago when Man was dependant on the weather for most things in life, the Rainbow was seen as a good omen. If we think back to Biblical times, after The Great Flood, when Noah saved all the animals, there was apparently a great big beautiful Rainbow signifying the end of the rain. Some people believe that a Rainbow in all its glory is a "Bridge" to Heaven, that only the good and virtuous can cross. I love the "Rainbow Bridge" poem, it is a favourite of mine which I keep by the ashes of my lost beloved pets.

However, through reflection and refraction it is a fascinating science that looks at how the white light is turned by countless millions of raindrops into such an organised spectrum of colours - red, yellow, green, orange, blue, violet, with many subtle blends between, there is an almost infinite number of colours in a Rainbow.

Why do we chase Rainbows? Who knows! Just the human need to believe in something that we know is not real but just pleases us to think it could be so...

Thoughtful Thursdays: Week # 4

If there were one word that could act as a standard of conduct for one's entire life, perhaps it would be "Thoughtfulness"

Confucius, 551-479BC Chinese Philosopher and Teacher.

What is Thoughtfulness? Simple enough - surely? If so, why do so many of us find it so difficult to be "thoughtful"? It surely has to be one of the greatest gifts one can give to family, friends and loved ones. It can mean the difference between a smile and a frown on people that we care about. The effects of "thoughtfulness" are indeed felt when it is strong and intentional. Making the effort to be thoughtful will almost certainly be met with a return act of thoughtfulness. This creates a cycle for love, appreciation and giving to blossom.

It is always good practice to take time out to consider how thoughful a person we all are and strive to be a little more thoughtful each day. One of the ways we can be more thoughtful is to step out of ourselves and look at how we would react if we were watching as an outside observer. Would people say we were kind, caring and considerate by what we do, or would they say we were mean, uncaring and selfish?

Thoughtfulness can be found in the smallest of things and will allow our inner self to shine out to the people that most deserve it in our lives.

* Create opportunities to make life brighter and more enjoyable for someone.

* Give someone you haven't spoken to for a while a call, email or letter.

* Pay a compliment, no matter how small to someone.

* A simple thing like "holding a door open for someone"

* Let someone go in front of you at the checkout in the supermarket

* Offer your seat to someone on a crowded bus/train.

* Just simply saying, "Thank You" can mean so much.

"Thoughfulness", when practised often, will become a habit, natural to you, making you feel better about yourself, and the world would become a better place to live because of the precedent that you've set with people, they'll go out of their way to make you happy as well! That can't be bad can it!

Thoughtful Thursdays: Week # 2

Today's "Thoughtful Thursdays" Post is about a dilemma that came up in my life recently. My computer went down with a virus WAH!! It took my daughter nearly five hours to sort it out for me, "Bless You Catherine!" It got me thinking, dangerous yes I know lol! But seriously ......

How would I manage without the Internet?

Could you live without the Internet?

Living without the Internet!! Me!! Oh my gosh, I don't think I could function without the Internet! Of course I wouldn't die or be scarred forever, I don't need to write blog posts, read blog posts or keep up with personal correspondence. Of course I don't need to, but in a way I sort of do I suppose. I really like to post as much as I can on my various blogs, facebook etc and I like to keep up with all of you others' blogs and websites - makes my day! I enjoy updating my own website- The House Of Genista and updating Caspers' page on The House Of Genista Favourites Blog.

As for Email, there are some relationships where email is our only form of correspondence. With some family/friends we would cease to talk altogether if we had to rely on the phone or Oh My Gosh, the dreaded hand-written letter! Then there's the Online Shopping/banking/paying bills. I always shop for food, like to see what we're getting as I'm very finicky with food, but a heck of a lot of the other stuff that we buy comes from the Internet, especially when shopping for Birthdays and/or Christmas. I must admit though, I do love shopping for Christmas presents with my daughters! That is a lot of fun! But Internet Shopping does generally make life so much easier and as there never seems to be enough time in a day, I don't know what I would do if I had to shop for everything. When the kids go off to school it seems a blink of an eye before your off to pick them up again and what with meetings, appointments and suchlike there is just simply not enough time to do it all offline.

If I had to shop for everything I would not be able to enjoy as much time with my beautiful Grandaughter Katie or my beloved pets, Casper and Megans' long countryside walks and of course would not have any time for my Bears and Art. Oh my, what would life be like? I feel blessed to have the life I have but no Internet would seriously disrupt it I feel.

Normally, I can live without the Internet for a day or two, but I do not like it I must admit! I usually have my dongle in hand when going to stay at the caravan but must admit that my dongle is sooo slow it drives me spare so rather than get annoyed with it I often just put it away on holiday!

Oh, the modern world we live in! Does that make me a boring, sad person, or just normal in this day and age?

Black glass eyes, needle felted little face, poly filled, cotter pin joint to his neck, thread jointed limbs. Jimny can stand unaided. Light blue satin ribbon with "Wish Upon A Star" charm adorn his neck, H of G Logo on right paw pad, H of G Hangtag and H of G COA. "Jimny" is a OOAK Teddy Bear created from Ambers pattern.

My 100th Post!!

My 100th Post!!

There is still so much to do and share with you! So much has happened in the last year that I have had the privilege of sharing with all of you, including the birth of my beautiful Grandaughter "Katie Rose", the very sad loss of my beloved friend/dog "Jasper", bears, bears and more bears, silliness and fun and also our recent new arrival "Casper" our sweet Chocolate Labrador Retriever who is now 16 weeks old.

I was so inspired by Cheryl at (Bingle Bears) recent post on her "Favourites on Fridays", a quote by William Shakespeare:

"Nothing Is Good Or Bad,

But Thinking Makes It So"

It is such a brilliant quote and so true. Your thoughts really do inspire and make your life!

My Anniversary Giveaway!!

She comes complete with her outfit made from a lovely quality cotton fabric to include dress, bloomers and matching bandana type ribbon to go around her head if choose. A House of Genista Hangtag and COA are also included. (She does not have the HG Logo on her paw pad due to the colour).

'World's Ugliest Dog' Dies, Aged 17

A small Chinese Crested hairless dog from the United States that won Animal Planet's "World's Ugliest Dog" competition in the US has passed away. (Click photo for link on MSN to read story)
Personally, I don't think there is such a thing as an Ugly Dog!! Miss Ellie (pictured above) I think is really cute, not ugly.

Lazy Week

It has been half-term this week so we have had a lazy week spent at the caravan. The weather has been lovely so it has been a great week all round. Casper ("Pappa" who he is affectionately known as) now 12 weeks old (see above) has thoroughly enjoyed his time in the sun. He is definetly an outdoor dog, just loves to laze and play in the sun. We have had plenty to do apart from lazing about - cinema, picnics, trip to McDonalds (yummy), country park for lovely walks with the dogs, meal out with all the family (lovely!!) and some retail therapy shopping lol. Not a bad week!! Unfortunately, there was not a bear or paintbrush in sight so when we get back home on Sunday evening it will be back to the grindstone I think in more ways than one.

My Grand-daughter, Katie-Rose is now 8 months old (18th May) and as lovely as ever. She is the picture of health and such a happy baby. Here she is at the park having fun with her Mum and Auntie. ("Love You Princess", Hugs Nanny xx)
